For many years, I have studied the business landscape in Nigeria and across the world and for some reason, I have always been interested in the companies that fail rather than the more successful ones. In all my years studying these companies, I have discovered that apart from lack of funding and poor management, the major reason why most companies fail is poor marketing.
Contrary to popular opinion, a good product does not sell itself. The statement in itself begs the question of who determines whether a product is good. Is it the producer or the customer?. The quality of a product is determined by the customer. The success of a product or service lies in its ability to effectively communicate and deliver value to its customers or users.
In the past two decades, technology has changed the way consumers respond to product marketing and advertising. These days, when people come in contact with a brand, the first thing they do is to search for the company online either on social media or on the web. This gives a certain credibility to the company. We have also experienced a shift from the more traditional marketing techniques to online marketing. Hence, companies need to embrace this change to ensure they remain relevant in the ever growing digital economy.
